Understanding Weighted Grades
Many high school and university courses do not use simple point totals to calculate final grades. Instead, they use a weighted grade system, where different categories (homework, midterms, quizzes, and the final exam) contribute a fixed percentage to your final course grade.
This can make it difficult for students to know exactly how they stand before entering final exam week. The Grade Calculator solves this by doing the inverse math to show you precisely what grade you need to score on the final exam to end the semester with your desired course average.
The Grade Calculation Formula
The formula to compute the required final exam score is:
$$F = \frac{T - (C \times (1 - W))}{W}$$
Where:
- $F$: Required Final Exam Score
- $T$: Target Overall Grade
- $C$: Current Overall Grade
- $W$: Final Exam Weight (as a decimal, e.g., 0.20 for 20%)
